"Spacelab 1 payload specialists Dr. Ulf Merbold (left) of the Federal Republic of Germany and Dr. Byron K. Lichtenberg of the United States pause inside a Spacelab mockup during training at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. They are the first career scientists from outside NASA's astronaut corps to fly aboard a U. S. spacecraft. Spacelab 1 is the maiden mission of the new, modular, reusable research facility developed for NASA by the European Space Agency (ESA). Spacelab is carried in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle orbiter. The first mission, aboard the ninth flight of the Space Shuttle (STS-9), is a joint venture of NASA and ESA. The Marshall Center has overall mission management responsibility." Photo by Rod Whited.
